The Wisconsin Dells 2011 season officially begins Memorial Weekend. People are already beginning to arrive for their 3 day weekend. We have had a slow start to spring but the weekend weather looks good except for cloudy/rainy on Saturday. The temps get warmer as the weekend progresses with Sat. at 73, Sunday a sunny 76 and Monday a sunny 86!

A couple ideas come to mind especially for tomorrow. The Dells has entered the world of full service Spas. I will tell you of two. Some would say that it is Christmas everyday here in the Dells. If you want snow--we have it. If you would like to forget winter--we can do that too at anyone of our numerous resorts with their indoor water parks.

Get a Flu Shot.....

Last week the schools in the Dells were shut down due to many kids absent with flu or colds and a few confirmed Swine flu cases. Nearly 29% of high school students were out sick.

Last Monday -10/5 the school began sending kids home who presented with any coughing or sneezing etc...and then by noon the county decided to simply close all schools down for a week.

School resumed this past Monday 10/12 and many children did not return due to illness. It is being stressed to keep kids home who are sick even if it is the common cold. From the "Dells Events"

"According to District Administrator Chuck Whitsell, absences were still high on Monday. At the high school, 10 percent of students were gone, 16 percent were gone from the middle school, 19 percent were absent from Spring Hill Elementary School, 17 percent were absent from Lake Delton Elementary School and 16 percent were absent from Neenah Creek Elementary School.

Whitsell said the district does not know whether students are absent for colds, seasonal flu or H1N1, but wasn’t surprised by the rise in percentages of students absent in the elementary schools compared with Tuesday last week."

The season began strong but I am afraid it is ending slow. August has been a bust given in the past it was the busiest of months.
The good news is the fun no longer ends on Labor day weekend.

Falls festivals continue to add fun and revenue to the Dells. Up first is the Polish Festival:

A walk through Town

I took a walk through downtown Dells yesterday. Playing tourist in away to see how things were going.
I was a bit surprised to find the area rather empty and even more surprised at the number of empty store fronts.
I do not recall ever seeing so many empty stores during the season.

It is not unusual for some business's to close their doors at the end of the season but never during the season.
It is no wonder there is concern about the economic issues for the downtown area.

Might I suggest that it is time to get back basics and bring back that which made downtown special. Cafes, quaint shops, and attractions in keeping with the area.

Biking Trails

It is a common site during spring, summer and fall. Bikers traveling in groups in colorful outfits--many having traveled miles by the time they reach the Dells. These are some serious bikers. I am not talking about motorcycles but the kind of bikes the require peddling.

I am often asked about bike trails in or around the Dells. Mirror Lake State park has a mountain bike course with three loops forming a wide circuit 9 miles in length.
This is just one trail--I will dig up others and post them.

Sales Drop Downtown Dells

The downtown area of the Dells is not what it use to be. Gone are the quaint shops replaced by T-shirt shops or tacky x rated stores. This letter to the editor in the Dells Events said it best:

"Marketing is least of problems in Dells

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I read that members of the Wisconsin Dells Business Improvement District cannot agree on how to address declining sales downtown.

They seem to think marketing is the problem. If the Dells wants to promote itself as a family destination and wants to get those families to leave the waterparks, how about starting with what those families see when they take a stroll down Broadway.

Let’s start with the shops openly selling drug paraphernalia. Or, the x-rated T-shirts you can’t walk 10 feet without running into. The Dells crossed the line between kitsch and sleaze a long time ago.

I am someone with a unique perspective. My family bought a home here in the 60s while vacationing from Chicago. I went to Dells schools and still own my parents’ home.

What I loved about the Dells as a young person doesn’t exist anymore. That’s fine, times change.

I used to ride horses at Thunder Valley. Now it’s my favorite place to take out of town guests for Sunday breakfast. But, first, we get to drive by the strip club to get there.

Take a drive on beautiful scenic River Road. Try not to notice the hideous Dix’s sign marring the landscape.

To use a famous movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life,” as an analogy, it’s as if the Dells has gone from being Bedford Falls to Pottersville in the last 20 years.

Marketing is not your problem, gentlemen. Marketing to the lowest common denominator in humanity is. Define yourselves. Set some standards. Stop letting “the quick buck” be your only guide.

There are some signs in town that point in a new direction. Shops that sell quality items are starting to appear.
Kitschy souvenir shops have a place, but the sleaze and porn have to go. Bring back some of what made the Dells great to begin with.

All representation of the Native American Culture seems to have disappeared entirely. I know the days of Chief Evergreen Tree acting as an ambassador to the Dells tourists as they walked around town have passed, but why is there nothing of the culture left for people to appreciate with their kids?

Do you want to see a difference in sales? Marketing is the least of your worries."

Dells Farmers Market

Before heading home stop at the farmers market to pick up some of the best fresh produce Wisconsin farmers have to offer.

Through October in Wisconsin Dells - Thunder Valley Farmer's Market.Thunder Valley Inn will host a farmer's market during the 2009 season at the inn and restaurant just outside of Wisconsin Dells. Traffic!

I know I have posted this before but gosh darn what is it going to take to get drivers to pull over and get out of their cars if they want to see something and not just stop in the road?
Or drive the speed limit?
Or go when the light is green?
Ask for help?
Look where they are going?
Slow down?
Speed up?
Drive in a safe manner?

OK--rant over. Seriously, we have only the one road in town. I wish the Dells power that be would ban all cars from downtown..................

"Car Shopping"

None of us want to dwell on possible criminal activity when on vacation but in some cases it is prudent to do so.
"Car Shopping" is what young people like to call theft of items in unlocked cars. Electronics, money and other items of value that maybe inside ones car. From the WDPD:

"Every year the City of Wisconsin Dells, like other police departments across the country, experiences a rash of thefts from motor vehicles. Thieves, usually in their late teens to early twenties, enter UNLOCKED VEHICLES and steal electronics, money and various personal items.

So common is this practice that young people who engage in this form of criminal activity often refer to it as “CAR SHOPPING”. Though these thieves are usually caught, much of the stolen property has been sold or destroyed and is never recovered. These thefts are easily prevented by removing items of value and locking the doors to your vehicle."

River Inn Open for Breakfast!

River Inn a motel on river rd right on the Wisconsin river has re-opened their restaurant for breakfast. This is indeed a treat for all.
Andy's famous eggs benedict and blueberry pancakes are back! Along with waffles, omelette's and other breakfast favorites.

The portions are beyond generous and the food is oh so good. Check it out--2 blocks off the main drag from downtown Dells. I promise you will not be sorry!

Looking for Fire Works?

There is no shortage of fire work displays in the Dells. Besides the yearly Kiwanis Club display several others are also offering holiday fun.

"This year more than 1,100 aerial shells will go up over the city. The display will begin at dusk on July Fourth in the area of the Dells Municipal Pool, La Crosse Street. The Kiwanis Club will provide a refreshment stand, with profits going to area community service projects and scholarships."

Wandering Tourists

It is early in the Dells summer season and already it is busy. Traditionally the Dells doesn't hit full stride until the end of June and beginning of July. Of course this is good news and business owners along with their employees can begin to breath again. There was some question if the Dells would suffer from the economic down turn or benefit from it as folks planned their vacations closer to home. So far it appears the latter is true.

Our visitors can be found wandering from one activity to another either on foot, boat or auto. Traffic suggests there are many wandering tourists trying to get from one place to another. I have come up with a few suggestions for these folks as they try to figure out the best way in or out.

First--one unavoidable fact is there is no getting around going across the bridge which connects the "strip" to downtown Dells. I know it is hard and the wait to get across can be long. Example: A funny thing happened to me and my friend as we waited on the bridge--the car next to us rolled down their window to share with us the fact they had to use the bathroom (these are not the words they used) but there was nothing we could tell them other than perhaps a trip to a bathroom is a good idea before getting stuck in traffic.

Next--if downtown is where you want to be then by all means PARK. Going around in circles in the hope of scoring one of the few parking spots on main street is futile. The only way to get one of those spots is to be downtown by 5am. But just a block off the main drag is plenty of parking and then you can get out and walk. This really is the best way to see all that is offered downtown.

One more thing--please stop leaving your pets in the car. Even a cracked window is not enough to save them from the heat and death. The police will break in and save animals and children left in this manner.

The Wisconsin River is still a River

A 57 year old man drowned Sunday in the river in spite of heroic attempts by Mary Moore who captains one of the Dells tour boats to rescue him.
There are areas of the river well suited for boating and water sports but it is a river and not a lake. Every summer we here the tragic news of drownings in the river.

The Pontoon boat involved also had two small children on it without life preservers--please please do not go out on the river or lake without proper life preservers. The Wisconsin River is a strong and powerful river and as such deserves respect.

Lyme & Deer Ticks

This is my public service post which I do every Summer and Fall.
With so many coming to enjoy the natural beauty of the Dells it is important to warn of a hidden danger--deer ticks. They are much different than your average wood tick. Deer ticks are red with a black head and very small. They carry Lyme disease --a disease that is far to prevalent in Wi.

Untreated Lyme causes a host of physical problems--I know--I am one of its victims.
Being diligent after a day in our great outdoors can prevent one from ever getting Lyme. Start by checking yourself and your kids--from head to toe.
Wear long pants with socks and shoes when spending time in the woods and use a bug spray that has DEET. Deet is the only thing that will repel deer ticks.
If you should find that you have been bitten--remove the tick and be sure you get the head. If your not certain you can--go to our walk in clinic and let them do it. You will need to go there anyway--because a tick found in the first 24 hours only requires one dose of anti-biotic.

Lyme disease is easy to prevent even if your bitten if you act fast. I did not and the disease has changed my life causing disability.

Dells 2009 Season Kick-Off

Memorial Day weekend is the official Wisconsin Dells season opener. Everything is open--From water parks to the much missed Tommy Bartlett ski show.
Last weekends Automotive festival was a success and gave us all a reminder of what a busy Dells looks like.

Our sleepy small town becomes the destination of choice for many tourists. There is a lot of speculation on how well this season will be given the economy. There are two schools of thought.

One is that folks who planned long vacations that took them farther away will put those plans on hold and come to the Dells a much closer and economically feasible alternative.
The other thought is folks will simply stay home and fill their vacation days in their own backyards. It will be interesting to see.

However, If last weekends festival was any indication I think we will be busy. With Lake Delton now restored to a pristine state and all water sports now back on board it will be a great adventure. Of course we can not forget the ever growing and improving water parks and if water is not your thing--there is plenty of other activities to keep a family busy--mini golf, fun houses, bumper cars, boat rides, and amusement parks to name a few.

In the coming days I will be blogging on the best attractions, the best deals and as always a locals view of the goings on in the Dells.

The Tommy Bartlett Ski Show Returns

One of the more gratifying openings for the Dells 2009 summer season (besides the return of Lake Delton) is the return of the ever popular and Dells staple "The Tommy Bartlett Ski Sky Stage Show".
Taking the old adage "the show must go on" to heart--Bartlett did a land only show during the 2008 season after the loss of the lake in early June of the same year.

The show took a hit loosing 90 percent of its business last summer. But they are back and the ski team will take to the water for their first ski show on Friday May 22.

House of Embers

One of the few supper clubs to survive the ever changing Dells--the "House of Embers" celebrates 50 years in business.
Known for their smoked ribs the Embers also offers small cozy theme rooms perfect for a romantic dinner for two.
The "Omar Sharif" room (once a closet) has been the place for around 500 proposals.

Not only is it a unique restaurant located on the strip--the food is good too. So congrats to this family owned business and to another 50 years. (click the post title and read the story).

Dells Automotion Festival

The weekend in May when all the really cool vintage cars show up is sort of the unofficial kick off for our summer season.
Always a fun time--the weekend auto festival is one of the better reasons to spend a weekend in the Dells. Even though the event is about vintage cars there is plenty of other activities scheduled IE: scavenger hunt, face painting and rides on the fire truck to name a few.

"Hundreds of smokin hot classic cars in the heart of Wisconsin Dells! Automotion 2009 classic car show features a swap meet, car corral, evening car cruise, raffle and activities for the kids. Spectator admission is free!"

Minnows Have Arrived

The nearly re-filled Lake Delton was able to begin restocking the lake with minnows on time due to generous donations and a lot of hard work.

"Another restoration fund donation came in and the first batch of minnows went out at Lake Delton Monday morning."

9 million minnows were released in time for their spawning season.

Riverfest

"A former, summer, temporary Wisconsin Dells police officer who was sued in November for allegedly forcing two National Guardsmen to lick urine from the ground was charged Thursday with stalking his former girlfriend.
Collin H. Jacobson, 21, of Lake Delton, is free on a signature bond after appearing in Dane County Circuit Court on Thursday, where he was charged with stalking, false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery."

I post this story for two reasons--first and foremost it is my hope that the WDPD chooses its summer officers with care for the upcoming season. The second reason is the Dells is not alone hiring very young officers who are making news by abusing the power given them.

Filling Lake Delton with Minnows

Pictured left is a frozen partially filled Lake Delton. For those that missed the dramatic damn breach allowing the lake to rush into the Wisconsin River taking houses and part of Hwy A with her after an early June storm-- stop over at YouTube and take a look.

Less than a year after this event the priority is to get the lake filled in time for the 2009 tourist season. Once Hwy A and the new damn were finished the refilling of Lake Delton began in December.
Governor Dolye has promised the Lake would be filled by the seasons kick off on Memorial Day weekend.
Millions of dollars are being spent on this project which includes restocking the lake with fish.
The issue now is minnows--the lake needs to be 3 feet higher in order for the minnows to spawn in Lake Delton and this has to happen by April 20Th.

Top Secret!

Top Secret is an upside down White House right here in the Dells. An old idea (fun house) with a new theme (White House).

It is one of the Dells Attractions open all year and each tour comes with a guide who spins a tale of robotic presidents and secret treasures as you walk the ceilings through the oval office and beyond.

As a heads up the reviews are mixed--everything from "very lame" to "I loved it". All I can say is it is a fun house and as fun houses go it fits the bill and it is a fun family outing. ( An upside down White House in todays political climate seems some how fitting :)

Hire American Update...

Adam T. Muller, International Employment Resources LLC wrote a letter to the editor in responce to previous letters asking Dells business's to hire American. In the letter Mr. Muller lays out the reasons why "hire American" will not work. One reason I had already mentioned in a previous post regarding American workers unwilling to take the more down and dirty jobs of housekeeping etc...

Here are some of his other reasons:

4. The foreign students have their own health insurance, which reduces the payroll cost to employers.

5. The employer is also saving on each student around 10 percent in fringe benefits, in comparison to the American employee.

6. I doubt that any of the larger Wisconsin employers would be willing and able to take risk hiring a 100 percent American workforce for three reasons

1. No local sources are able to provide 3,500 American students.

2. Even if the American students will apply and sign the contract, it is doubtful the employee will report to the job and stay until the end of the season.

3. The labor cost would increase from $10 to $12 per hour.

With the warmer weather the "Dells" begins to prepare for the 2009 tourist season. There is much to do--clean up, new inventory, amusement inspections, new water slides etc....
Not to mention the re-filling of Lake Delton lost during a storm right before the 2008 summer season. That alone hurt the economy for many business's last season and now we face a nation wide economic melt down.

Everywhere there is speculation as to what kind of season we will have this summer. Will people come? Or save their money and stay home? Some are already predicting a short fall for this season. It has been my experience in the 20 some odd years I have lived here that when the economy is down so too is tourism to the Dells.

Some are clearly more positive given the continued expansion and building going on. I bet there will be some awesome deals to be had. Be sure to sign up at dells.com for on-line coupons and other savings.

Yes!!!!! Already the sounds of spring are all around. Birds singing, chainsaws buzzing. Go outside and it smells like spring! That fresh spring air that smells of pine with a hint of mint. People are peeling off a few layers and melting snow is giving way to mud! I never thought I would be happy to see mud but I am ecstatic.

It has been one cold winter and yes I realize that this early warm spell could simply lead to another freeze but I refuse to think that way.

My fuel tank reads 30% and I refuse to do another fill. Will I make it?

I think we will have an early spring just as winter arrived way to early. Just to get you all in the spring mood. Remember to turn your clocks ahead before going to bed Saturday night because by Sunday March 8Th we will be back to daylight savings time.

Ah yes, Spring approaches and so too the preparation for the 2009 summer tourist season in the "The Dells".
For several years the Dells has hired workers from overseas to fill the many seasonal jobs that a tourist area generates. Before this trend these jobs were filled by students, retirees and transient workers. At the start the foreign worker program acted almost like a student exchange program and added a nice touch of culture here. However, over the years the program has garnered a bad reputation in Europe and here for many reasons.

Abuse of the workers and abuse of the system by the workers is among the reason the program to fill jobs with foreign workers is no longer viewed by locals as a "nice" program. This post is about our current economy and voices rising up to hire American. Below is three letters to the editor from the Dells Events:

Resorts should hire Americans, not foreigners

Joan Forsythe's letter was right to the point. We have 4,000,000 workers out of work and the businesses here still refuse to hire Americans.
Get rid of the illegals with the phony Social Security cards. If the businesses don't want to do this lock the door.
The Dells has a very bad reputation in Europe and now the waterparks are into Russia hiring students. That's a whole continent that won't come here. The new wage should be 40 hours at $15 per hour and full benefits. They can afford it they charge $400 to $500 per night.
We will have to wait and see if the Dells hires American. We will be the laughing stock of this country if we hire foreigners. The water parks have laid off people and hired new employees. Is that fair or are they breaking the law.

Hire Americans first
I've been reading the Dells Events lately and agree with the letters written by Ralph Johnson and Joan Forsythe. They wrote about local businesses hiring foreign workers instead of the hard working local boys and girls.
It seems like the best thing to do would be to hire local students. That way the money stimulates the local economy — gas, school clothes, car insurance.
Johnson's letter about waterparks laying off locals and hiring foreign workers is correct. I spoke to one local family whose son was told that this one waterpark had to first send out e-mails to people in Turkey.
It is not just me. I've spoken to people at gas stations, former youth sports coaches and people who are retired looking for a part-time job. All agree that locals seem to be getting the shaft.
Does anyone remember the "Buy American" slogan of the '70s or '80s? How about "Hire Americans" for the new slogan?

Will tourists resent foreign workers this summer?
As a follow up regarding the tremendous unemployment issues facing our country at this time, I have some questions of concern before the busy tourist season begins.
Does the Dells contact various colleges, unemployment centers, newspaper recruitment ads, to fill seasonable positions available? I don't know the answer to this. I am aware of the recruitment overseas.
Of course, the housing situation is also a big concern. Where to house them needs to be addressed. It surely hasn't been the best in previous years.
As a former tourist of 40 years myself, my concern is looking ahead towards the countless tourists who come here each season, and what their reactions would be to take back home seeing countless foreign students filling these jobs, when the United States is suffering record high unemployment, which is constantly in our media headlines.
Will they want to return here with seeing their money paying the salaries of overseas foreign workers, or will this start a trend toward looking for other vacation destinations, along with spreading the word back home?
This is my concern: To keep the Dells tourist economy at the highest level possible in these present difficult times facing our country, and further on into the future.

FYI, to be fair, one of the reason workers have been hired from overseas is there was not enough local help and students often left their jobs before the season end to salvage some summer fun and get ready for school.

Heads up/ Lock Car Doors

Living in a rural community one tends to not be as concerned about petty crimes like break-ins.
Up until a few years ago I never locked my door at home never mind the car but this is not the case anymore. Now I lock and secure everything that isn't already nailed down.

This Dells Events headline confirms the need to lock up. Several of the car break-ins happened at resorts.

"A number of car break-ins this weekend led to the loss of approximately $3,000 in personal property, according to police reports.

Following an onslaught of publicity and lobbying, the Wisconsin Legislature feels compelled to "get tough on drunk drivers."
This is a biennial event that has taken place at least for 20 years. Every session a menu of more punitive, restrictive, and arbitrary proposals is created and promoted by MADD and other anti-alcohol interests. This year a special effort is being made to capitalize on national publicity that implies Wisconsin residents are a collection of drunken losers. This impression was further driven home by a multi-month series in a major daily newspaper that reinforced the same implication.

To Festival or not to Festival?

"The Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau is conducting surveys to look at the impact of festivals, including doing one for the recently completed Flake Out Festival."

In the mean time the Wisconsin Dells Business Improvement District committee or BID is looking at having more festivals.

"The impact of the festival on business was surprising, said Brown.
Mayor Eric Helland said if festivals work for the district, and they do seem to, the BID committee should look for more festivals to have."

The Dells visitor bureau wants to know if the three festivals we already have are still relevant with the Flake Out Festival being top of the list. Created 19 years ago to boost winter tourism before the onset of indoor water parks--there is some question of whether it generates business to downtown stores.

On the other side the BID is looking at ways to generate more festivals including those in the winter.
At their meeting they talked about working with the Dells visitor bureau but as I have mentioned before--the policy of the visitor bureau of not helping non-members could impede coordination.

"The committee discussed coordinating special events and activities with the bureau, but not all businesses downtown are members of the bureau, which has a rule to not promote nonmembers."

Personally I like festival time in the Dells and given the amount of people who come it would seem I am not alone. Given the economy these types of events just might be a good idea for the area.

Flake Out Preperations Underway

Volunteer workers from the Original Wisconsin Ducks and the Tommy Bartlett Show filled about 30 of these forms with snow for the Flake Out Festival snow sculpting contest this weekend. The blocks are 10 feet tall by 6 feet wide by 6 feet long.

Our frigid temps are no deterrent for this weekends Flake Out Festival. A 3 day event that brings 25 teams of the best snow sculptors to the area.

"The traditional activities — a third annual arts and crafts show, marshmallow snowball eating contest, ice sculpting, live music, food and children's entertainment — take place Saturday and Sunday."

According to the rules there are no power tools allowed. Sculptors begin to shape their 6 by 8 block of snow with a shovel or hatchet. Sandpaper is used for the finishing touches. As one who has enjoyed this art form I have to say that these are some talented folks and the finished products are awesome.

"Flake Out activities:
The following is a list of activities surrounding Flake Out Festival which takes place between the Amtrak train depot and JustAgame Fieldhouse off La Crosse Street in downtown Wisconsin Dells.
The Arts and Crafts Marketplace in JustAgame Fieldhouse features nearly 80 exhibitors from 9 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Craft activities for children are scheduled to coincide.
Horse-drawn wagon rides and pony rides take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Wisconsin Gambling Hotline

I have been doing some catching up since my return from my holiday in El Paso, TX. It was an awesome trip by the way and the weather --oooh the weather--65 and sunny on Christmas!
Ok, back to reality and this post. As I mentioned I have been reading and catching up on the happenings here in the Dells when I came across an article in the Dells Events regarding an increase in calls to the gambling hot-line.

"The holidays coupled with hard economic times could contribute to the increase in calls to the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling helpline, said the nonprofit organization's executive director, Rose Gruber, recently at an educators' conference at Kalahari Resort and Conference Center in Lake Delton."

Seems calls to the hot-line are up this year (12,000) compared to last year at this time (9,400).
Those with gambling problems attempt to better their financial status with the ever elusive "get rich quick" roll of the dice.

"People who call the helpline are referred to counseling, Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon chapters, statewide sources that can help someone overcome a gambling problem. "

The Ho Chunk Casino is just a hop skip and a jump from the Dells and it is one place where the parking lot is always full. 24 hour gambling and a definite tourist draw.
Compulsive gambling is a problem here that does not show up in the shinny tourist brochures that advertise Dells attractions.

We have the first whopper of a storm headed our way. Winter storm warnings are up for most of Wisconsin and the Dells is no exception.
I will tell you--the ski resorts are singing with glee! A foot of real snow on top of what they have already made means a very Merry Christmas for them.

Not to mention the folks who like to ski, snow board, snow mobile and of course the very good chance the kids will get a "snow day".

Hwy A is finally open! Why the wait since the work has been done since late Nov.?

"Huddled in a heated tent with a couple hundred people, Governor Jim Doyle happily announced the official opening of County Highway A Friday morning as local and state dignitaries flanked him to his right and to his left."

The old pat each other on the back thing. Yet so many unanswered questions remain on why the lake flooded and took Hwy A with it in the first place????

Ski Resorts Open

What is the good news when freezing temps come early? Snow! the man made kind. Snow making machines have been busy making snow allowing for local ski resorts like Cascade Mt. and Devils Head to open.

Dells Police & Letters to the Editor

As much as the Dells Events may want to spin or ignore the story of the lawsuit brought by two National Guardsman against the WDPD the town folk are not about to let them. Many locals are embarrassed for our police department as can be seen in the "letters to the editor" section of the "Dells Events". (click post title)

There is one letter that asks the question:
Just what kind of police department does the Dells have? The letter " What kind of meme exists in police department?" by Robert Reid is well worth the read.

From my own experience I know there exists several very nice and dedicated officers. There are also several who walk a fine line between civil servant and power trip.
While the two of the officers were limited hires for the summer I can not get over the fact they were 19 and 20 yrs of age???? I like many others are now wondering what exactly are the policies for hiring within the WDPD?

Our local paper has caught up with the news regarding the pending lawsuit filed by two National Guardsman against the WDPD.

"Wisconsin Dells Mayor Eric Helland expressed support for the Wisconsin Dells Police Department after two National Guardsmen filed a civil suit against the city and police claiming their rights were violated."

Is this just some political maneuvering to make someone look good while we as taxpayers have been footing the bill.
I just cannot believe that we should continue to wait for a roadway to open especially since it is obviously ready for traffic and has been since Nov. 17. Thank you to those who continue to wait for the pat on the backs and the attaboys while we as taxpayers foot the bill.

National Guardsman vs Wisconsin Dells

"Police officers made guardsmen lick up supposed urine, lawsuit states .."

"Two Wisconsin National Guardsmen filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Wisconsin Dells, its police chief and three officers because they were forced to lap up what was believed to be human urine from the ground last summer.
The guardsmen, both of whom have served two tours of duty in Iraq, were in the Dells for weekend training and were stopped by police officers Wayne W. Thomas and Collin H. Jacobson early the morning of June 1 and accused of having urinated in public, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Madison."

Every summer the WDPD hire extra officers for the summer. The two officers accused were 19 and 20. One was fired on the spot and the other given a suspension but is still on the force.
Officer Scott Albrecht( of the "Ride Along" debacle--check out my Oct posts) was given a reprimand for failing to follow procedure.

"A third officer, Scott Albrecht, arrived at the scene and was told by Jacobson, "I can't stop laughing. Wayne just made those two guys lick their own piss off the ground," according to the lawsuit. "

Freshly painted lane lines on the portion of HWY A that was taken out by last springs flood and breach of Lake Delton.

We are told the road will re-open in early Dec. after a ribbon cutting ceremony. We are also reminded that to use the road before this is a citation in waiting.

HWY A is not only important to tourism but also to locals traveling to Baraboo and beyond. It cuts a good 10-15 minutes off travel time. I am not at all sure why we have to wait another 3-4 weeks but it will sure be nice to have that road back as the detour is the long way around.

Dells Deep Freeze

I think it is safe to say that winter has arrived. The calender may say the official start of winter is Dec. 21st but that has never made a difference in the Dells. It is cold! 14 degrees cold (over night low).

This means they are making snow! Our local ski resorts are busy getting their ski & snow boarding hills ready to go.

Christmas Mountain in the Dells has always made winter fun.

Wisconsin Dells Budget Concerns

The city's public hearing regarding the proposed budget is still scheduled for Monday Nov. 17th.
One of the city's best resources is slated for a 6,117 cut from its 2009 budget to help the city balance her books.

The valued resource? Is our public Library which is one of the best in rural Wisconsin. It is also one of the last places the city should be taking money away from to fix what I consider bad management.

This public hearing is important and I encourage everyone to attend and speak out. Our Library does not just serve locals but is a lifeline for tourists and foreign workers who use its computer section to stay in touch with the folks back home.

Naturally the library board is unhappy with the cuts and has criticized the city.
"Secretary Debbie Kinder said she will express the board's concerns at the city's public hearing."

Wisconsin Dells Public Works Director Mike Horkan to resign! (here is a bottomless pit of wasted funds)
Personally, I think the entire common council should resign.

I know we are a tourist town and this is primarily a blog about Dells tourism but it is after all the off season and given the letters to the editor about the upcoming election--reading them is as much a sport as the bumper cars.

The Democrat Party relies on mass stupidity to remain in power.
Democrats aren't interested in helping the poor. If they truly were concerned about the poor and the needy, they would open up their own wallets, but they don't.

Who would you call reputable and responsible Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin? What if things were switched around? Think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different?

Not Enough Money?

Seems the Dells is short on money for basic services!!!
With some of the highest property taxes in the state and nation this seems a tad bit odd. Add to that the money made from being a tourist town-- sales tax, room tax etc...I can not help but wonder why?

The budget will be published in the Dells Events, and a public hearing will be held before the Nov. 17th council meeting is held to approve the budget.
Citizens should attend the meeting and ask questions if they have any.

Yet Another Resort!

River Road in Wisconsin Dells (the scenic ) is an oasis in what is fast becoming a sea of T-shirt shops, water parks, restaurants and motels.
The natural wooded beauty of the Dells is being lost along with the water front of the Wisconsin River due to (in my opinion) over building.

This newest endeavor is real close to me--far to close!

Political Vandalism Comes to the Dells

Seems there is no-where one can go to escape the run up to election day. Not even "The Dells", the land of fun and games.

Many people express their political desires and choices with campaign yard signs, window decals and bumper stickers.
People here are no different--they too are expressing themselves in this way.

However, there has been a rash of vandalism against folks who choose to display political signs. Some not liking what they see have taken to trespassing to remove signs or painting over them.
Damaging cars and windows the same way.

A few residents have posted warnings to those responsible or anyone else who might get the urge to "run and grab". "Web Cams" are up and running--you will be caught in the act!

Personally, I will be glad when this election is over!

The International Crane Foundation

With near perfect fall weather people are out taking in the wonders of color our country side offers.

I got a tip from my friends at http://dellsadvice.com/ that the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo is offering free admission for those who live or work in Sauk county or The Dells.

I have been there a few times and I have to say--it is well worth it. If your interested in nature and Cranes in particular--this is a great outing for the entire family.

Reporter Takes Heat from Police Ride Along...

OK, up until now I have simply posted about the story in our local paper of the reporter and his ride along with the WDPD.
Now after yet another letter to the editor and after the article had been "corrected" I have to ask--why condemn the paper and reporter Andy Steinke?

Is the Dells Events censored? If so, why and by who?
I think most of us in the Dells are grateful to our police and fire & rescue folks. Not everyone could do their job--it takes a special type of person to serve in this way. But they are human just like the rest of us. With that said, I am just not sure I understand the uproar over Andy's human interest story.

I hope our small town paper will continue to write more human interest stories and if they ruffle feathers--so be it. That's what the letters to the editor are for.

WDPD Ride Along Takes a U Turn..........

I posted on the story of a ride along with the WDPD by reporter Andy Steinke of the "Dells Events".
After all, it was a good human interest story of an evening with one of the Dells finest.
In one installment he ended with:

"Pick up a paper again Saturday to read how Albrecht finds a way to pull the car over, how we find a couple of guys breaking in to an information stand and how we deal with a second encounter with one of the bachelorette parties."

Now this is where it gets confusing as my post yesterday describes. Seemed all I could find of the conclusion of Andy's ride along was a repeat of what he had already written with a new title.
Today's on-line edition of the paper does have the conclusion but not before clarification and corrections:

"Clarification/Correction
In the first and second parts of this series, some errors were made.
Of stops mentioned, the article said the officer chased a car. No chase occurred. The squad turned around and followed the car before making the stop. There was no chase. "

"a microphone was not turned on, Steinke was not expressing disapproval of not being able to hear, but that something more interesting was not happening.
Officer Landers did not see the raccoons and Steinke did not point them out to him. The squad was only going about 10 mph when that occurred. "

"In the second article, Steinke incorrectly said he heard "your insurance premiums doubled." Steinke made that comment, not the officer. The young women from the bachelorette party did not make a pass at the officer, but did flirt with him."

OK, clearly, I missed part one of this series since part two was printed twice--I think? I am totally confused at this point.
However, what I am not confused about is either Andy took some liberties to build interest for the conclusion by suggesting the officer was going to pull over a car for no reason or the WDPD didn't like his story.

At any rate--click the title of this post to read the conclusion of Andy's ride along with all its clarifications, corrections and glowing summary:

"Officers work hard to keep Dells safe
Despite the overall lack of activity on this particular night, I learn a lot about the department, and I know the Dells police officers work their hardest to keep Wisconsin Dells safe. It's unfortunate that I couldn't have been with them on a night that might have better exemplified the true difficulty of their jobs. "

"During the little action we did have, I found the officers to be polite and considerate, and if I was in need of help, I would certainly want one of them to be the one who responded. "

"For those with a negative view of police officers, I would encourage you to ask your local police department if you can join an officer on a ride along to see some of the things they have to deal with from night to night."

Ride along part two????

I was going to post the conclusion of the police ride along from Saturdays Dells Events but it did not make the paper.
Instead, there was a retitled reprint of the reporters first story along with an angry letter to the editor.

"I know the Dells cops to be very hard working people. They have helped my relatives many times with their troubled kids.
I remember when one relative had her purse stolen. The Dells cops chasing this guy and fought with him. He was a real nut.
I don't know whose bright idea it was to have a reporter ride with them, but that story was terrible and really portrayed the cops in a bad way. The reporters snide remarks were not necessary. I am surprised the Dells Events would print an article written that poorly. Kudos to all of our cops and thank God you do the job you do!"

Night Ride With Dells Police

Yep, the season is sure over here in Wisconsin Dells and for some--it is down right boring.
Our local news paper has a story running that includes a reporter riding along one Friday night with the Dells finest.

It is written in a time frame format to give us readers the feel that we too are riding along. The ride along begins:

"n 11:02 p.m. We smell sulfur in the air as we drive down a Broadway side street. Albrecht figures we'll get a call for an illegal fireworks complaint sometime tonight, but we never do.
n 11:20 p.m. I started work at 9:30 a.m. and I yawn for the first time.
n 11:21 p.m. I yawn again. Uh-oh."

The ride along ends with this cliff hanger:

"n 1:55 a.m. We have been back on patrol for about 10 minutes and we stop in another alley off Broadway and check license plates as they drive by.
n 2:00 a.m. Things are slow so Albrecht pulls out behind and car and says, "We are going to find a reason to pull this car over." I'm skeptical because the driver has no headlights or brake lights out and is driving the speed limit down the middle of his lane."

The writer is Andy Steinke of the "Dells Events" and he tells us to:

"Pick up a paper again Saturday to read how Albrecht finds a way to pull the car over, how we find a couple of guys breaking in to an information stand and how we deal with a second encounter with one of the bachelorette parties." (Click the post title to read the whole thing)

Camp Wawbeek Fall Sprawl

This Saturday is the Annual Fall Sprawl at Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells.
In the midst of all the water parks, amusement parks, water sports and all the other activities that make up the "Dells" is Camp Wawbeek.

An Easter Seals camp that has served the disabled for 70 years. Both children and adults can enjoy nature and outdoor activities on 400 acres of woodlands. Highly trained counselors meet the individual needs of each camper.

"When campers arrive at Camp Wawbeek just north of Wisconsin Dells, they have full access to 400 acres of beautiful woodlands. Within the classic camp setting, campers can boat, fish, hike, climb, swim, play basketball, do crafts, race through obstacle courses and fly through the air on a zipline! Lake Delton Summer Tourism Losses

The losses for the 2008 summer tourist season are beginning to come in--especially for Lake Delton.
The loss of the lake following major storms early in the season has taken a toll for business's that relied on the Lake for their income.

"For the many resorts around Lake Delton, the three months they rely on to stay in business were a bust this year."
One example:
"Allessi owns the Sandrift Resort, which is still reeling from the pain of a financial punch in the gut.
As the water poured out of Lake Delton, Allessi said the cancellations poured in.
"Approximately $93,000," said Allessi."

The storm's damage was bad enough but what followed was a lot of bad information via the media-- causing people to stay away thinking all of the Dells was a disaster area.
How badly the rest of the Dells suffered is not yet known.

Sad Day :(

Business in the Dells is a fickle thing. Here today and gone tomorrow is a refrain many of us are use to.
Half the time a new business will open and fold before I even knew it existed--there are so many I can not keep track.

Each spring I drive through town and up & down the strip to see whats new or no longer here.
Many deals are struck in the winter months--so and so bought this resort or that motel to add to their already large holdings. But all that is part of the "resort wars" I have written about before.
Stuck in between are the many small businesses --restaurants, mom & pop motels, souvenir shops, candy stores, fudge shops, Ice cream parlors and so on..............

Every year a new business will open in a building of one that has failed. Most do not survive their first summer--they come and go so fast they are hardly noticed. Just a blip on the Dells economic chart. But whenever a well established business closes it is a sad day.

When I opened the paper I was greeted with this announcement:
"After being part of the Wisconsin Dells area entertainment scene for 18 years, Rocky Rococo's Restaurant has closed its doors permanently. "

Not Rocky's! was my first reaction. They had the best Pizza and delivery service!
I am sure there are many factors that caused this failure--tourism was down this summer, competition from other restaurants and a lost lake to name a few.
But still, Rocky's???? Another empty building?

As the greed from the few continue to expand along with their resorts we will have more Rocky's.

Weekend Warriors

In the fall the Dells becomes a weekend destination for nature lovers and hunters.
Yep--its that time of year.

September begins bow season--- the hunt for the perfect 14 point buck.
Our woods are filled with folks collecting colorful leaves or tracking deer trails.

Makes for a really odd mix since the nature lovers are an anti-hunting bunch and the hunters want the nature lovers out the woods because they are scaring the deer away.

But wait until November when gun season begins!!!!!

Palin Debate Alive & Well in the Dells

Sarah Palin has managed to scare the socks off local Democrats in our small little town in the heart of Wisconsin.
If MSNBC is to be believed--right now as of today--Wisconsin could decide the 2008 race for the White House.

Hard to believe our state of dairy farmers, tourism, beer guzzling tavern patrons and Packer fans might stand in the way of an Obama presidency.
What a hoot lol!
In 2004 our state went blue by the narrowest of margins--so it is very possible we will be one of those key states.

In the mean time--our local paper is alive with debate regarding Palin in the form of "Letters to the Editor".
Here is some sample excerpts:

Palin makes exaggerated claims about record
What does it say about John McCain when he has succumbed to the conservative right by choosing as his running mate someone who has exaggerated her record and made claims that are just now coming to light? Is he really putting "Country First" or has his ambition so clouded his mind that he would select someone like Palin in order to mollify the base of his party? Perhaps he should have checked her record. In his exuberance, he certainly needs to be careful not to perpetuate her claims.......

Now the other side:

Palin is OK
Hamm criticizes Palin for "actively seeking the support" of the fringe Alaska Independence Party. Would she like to talk about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? What does he believe? "God damn America," "U.S. is to blame for 9/11," "America invented the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color." Obama didn't just "actively seek his support" but called him a "spiritual mentor" for over 20 years.
Hamm criticizes Palin for putting an end to the "Bridge to nowhere," or not putting an end to it? Palin did put an end to it, and I applaud her.
Sarah Palin is a strong, successful American woman who thinks of herself as a "pitbull with lipstick", while Obama says "a pig with lipstick is still a pig". We know he didn't mean it that way — ooops!

Hidden under the atmosphere of the Mid-West vacation playground that is "The Dells" is a rivalry between ancestral Dells families and transplants from Chicago or other areas.
I being a transplant myself (20yrs ago) have had occasion to see a bit of the bias against new comers but nothing like what I found written in our local paper.

Being that I am not a business owner or part of the Dells tourist community I fly under the radar.
Seems however, there is some bad blood brewing between the two groups. It is true that many folks from Chicago and other places but mostly Chicago go from tourist to resident. They like it here and so they move here.

Often they purchase business's or buy land to build a dream house. This however seems to bug some of our ancestral founding families.

Transplants have rights and support the area:

"Opinions are one thing. Insulting and attempts to embarrass a person is quite another.
When things such as this are done on my Internet dog show exhibitors' list, the moderator tells them to take it private, or be removed from the list.
Everyone in this entire area has ancestors who came from across the ocean way back, or in more recent decades moved here from other areas as transplants because of their love for the Dells area.
The only people who actually can claim this area as their own were the Native Americans. And, we know what was then done to them.
We transplants, from Chicago or wherever, pay our taxes here and support this area. Many of us supported this area with our money for years as tourists before actually moving here.
Some choose to be the silent majority while others choose to become active in the communities and try and make it a better place to live. Is this wrong? Does this make them troublemakers? "

"I don't get it. Why, in this day and age, in a part of the world where people have access to schools, books, newspapers, radio, TV, satellite dishes and computers does such old fashioned clannishness persist?
Imagine someone writing, "Who does he think he is, moving here from Chicago and telling people who have been here all their lives what to do." Then imagine this person being so clueless as to sign his name to such a ridiculous statement."

I have to say--this is a strange town with their love-hate relationship with the very folks that have made them rich!

Oh So Quite

Can you hear it? No? That's because we are now a town of 2,500 again.

Soon the numbers will come in for this season. I am anxious to see them as really this was a slow season compared to normal.

The draining of Lake Delton hurt business--that can not be ignored.

The over-all change in the Dells from a wonder spot to overly commercialized has also hurt.

But for now we will enjoy the peace and quiet......................

The Dells Last Day--Its Over!

Hurrah!!! I can not tell you how relieved everyone is. I am sorry if this post sounds ungrateful but facts are facts.
The fact is the Invasion of the summer folks is over and everyone is happy :)

It isn't so much the tourist's themselves as much as the royal mistreatment of the locals.
Here are few examples from some locals I spoke to yesterday after a couple of tourists tried to bully me out of a very long line at Walgreens. They just walked up and said: "you need to let us go ahead of you"--I did not budge and listened as they talked trash about me the Dells etc...I bit my tongue as I was so close to just saying GO HOME!

"The town stores marking up the prices the week before Memorial Day and marking them back down the Tuesday after Labor Day. The increased traffic ( the ignoring of stop & go is maddening), the rude demanding rich or not so rich people who felt a sense of ownership, the total lack of regard for personal property, and the noise at all hours from people who didn't have to get up the next morning and go to work, and the crazy work hours along with poor wages."

"The cost of things (merchants take advantage of tourists with their prices so locals suffer, too) and the general congestion in an otherwise lovely town. "

" It is the gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants that raise their prices between Memorial Day and Labor Day--I drive 25 miles to get food!"

As you can see the complaints follow a pattern---traffic, price gouging, and tourists with bad attitudes.
So yes--I am happy they are headed home.

Down Town Dells (Broadway)

The sales have begun on this the last official weekend of the season.

With the exception of the upcoming fall festival in mid September the sales are good.

Of course most everything is standard souvenir type things but there are some good sales of clothes, toys and of course T-Shirts :)

Labor Day

This is it--the last hurrah. It will be very busy this last weekend of the Dells season. The last of the water parks and swimming pools (outdoors anyway).
The last of the traffic--yippee! The end of jobs and the start of school.

By next Tues. it will appear like a ghost town. My friends at Walgreen's cant wait--back to normal hours instead of the 24 hrs a day thing.
Everyone is ready got the season to end. Nothing personal it is just the way it it feels after working 7/7 for 5 months.

Today--me and grandchild number 2 are headed to get last min school stuff, b-day presents and food (so I do not have to leave this house until Tues lol).

Its time to go and beat the traffic!

Winter in the Dells

The summer season is nearing its end and with that our town turns back into a sleepy small rural town like any other.
Most of the stores and numerous hotels close as their owners take off to Florida.

So what to do with this blog? Well I will continue posting on this blog because the Dells does have a winter season.
Granted, nothing like summer of course but for years this town has been working on a winter season.
With the advent of the huge indoor water park resorts and convention centers--the Dells winter tourist season is growing.

Not to be left out is hunting, ice fishing, ice sculpting, snowmobiling, and skiing. Yes, the Dells has skiing at what is called Christmas Mt. (linked).
Just about all winter sports can be found here.

Or the resorts for those who simply want to play in the water and pretend it isn't 20 below.
Stay tuned as I update what is going on in the Dells for the fall/winter season along with the progress of the expected return of Lake Delton this spring.

"We quickly unpacked a few things, changed into swim gear and headed to the water park. There are three large indoor areas with wave pool, racing belly slides, tube slides, kiddie slides and the Tornado. The Tornado has a steep drop to a cone shaped area. Your tube goes back & forth across the water until you finally go down the tube to the end. Don’t sit too far down in the tube, or you’ll drag your bottom across the water at a high rate of speed. OUCH!"

Summers End

While the summer season is less than two weeks out until it is officially over. Already the city is gearing up for one of the best fall festivals we have.

The weekend of Sept. 12-14 will bring a ton of people who can shop to they drop if so inclined.

This is one event set entirely in downtown Wisconsin Dells.

Everything from bargain prices outside each shop, flea markets, food vendors, music, farmers market, beer tents, free live entertainment, and one of the best parades ever.

It is the one event that I love. The only time the massive population and traffic do not bother me. ( I walk--only tourists drive)

Prices are great and the flea market is just awesome--there is nothing that one can not find.

I have picked up antiques, games, half price winter clothes and the first apples of the season.

I actually get half my Christmas shopping done during this one weekend.

The Annual Wo-Zha-Wa Days Fall Festival--I forgot to mention the antiques, arts and crafts and the always impressive craft show, jewelry artists, painters, street acts.

Wow, I could go on forever. Needless to say--if you can--be here!

Ah yes--mid August, the countdown to Labor Day begins.
Everyone is tired to the bone. Tired of working 7 days a week, tired of fighting traffic, tired of high prices and tired of being tired!

We call it Augistitis....................
Symptoms include:
1. cranky
2. lashing out
3. sleep deprived
4. confusion
5. smiles turned up side down.

It happens every year at the same time. It is nothing personal just the side effects of doing a years worth of work in a few short months.
We all begin to crave our boring sleepy small town back.

Two more weeks--hang in there.........................

The Bureau Speaks...............

As expected the Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau sent a letter to the editor in response to the editorial mentioned in my previous post. Here is a small sample--follow the link to read it all.

"The proposed amendments do not increase the authority of the Board of Directors to deny membership applications (Membership agreements). The board has always had the ability to reject any membership application for any reason as long as it doesn't discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, or as otherwise prohibited by law. "

n" The code of conduct being proposed is intended to clarify what is expected as a member of this organization. Certainly expecting members to be upstanding partners with the bureau, and with each other, is in everyone's best interest."

The Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau

What does tourism and politics have to do with one another? Given the power the Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau or VCB has, a whole lot.
For years this organization has put fear in the hearts of business owners. Fear they would be kicked out and lose business.

The VCB has done it too with little or no regard for fairness. They wield a very big stick and now they want this hidden power as part of the By-Laws.
At its inception, the Bureau was an example of the business community cooperating so all may benefit but these days small business is given the shaft and the VCB wants to make official their power to kick anyone out as they deem harmful. The key here is how "they deem" with zero oversight or guidelines.

This has been going on for years but now it has hit the fan and is playing out in our local paper.

"One business wrote to the Events expressing concern about that section of the by-laws but not signing a name. The letter states, "The VCB is trying to change its by-laws so that the board of directors will have the power to decide who gets to join. If you complain too much about the VCB's policies you will be in danger of being denied membership." The letter concludes, "Needless to say, I will not put my name on this for fear of being thrown out of the VCB.""

Or, is it as simple as: One man, Nick Laskaris, does not play ball well with another man, Tom Diehl?

These two guys are what one would call big wigs here and they are now openly fighting via the paper? What a hoot..........
Go read the whole thing because I am sure tomorrows paper will contain responses from the "other side".
